MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a dark comedy-drama that follows the journey of Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green), a U.S. Army veteran in Afghanistan, who finds herself at odds with her family over the presence of Zoe (Natalie Morales), her deceased best friend from the Army. Despite the insistence of her VA counselor (Morgan Freeman), the tough love of her mother (Gloria Reuben), and the vanity of an unexpected love interest, Merit’s delightfully dysfunctional friendship with Zoe keeps the pair isolated from the world. That is, until Merit’s estranged grandfather (Ed Harris) — holed up in the family’s lake house — starts to lose his way and needs the one thing he refuses to do — help. At its core, it’s a buddy movie about complicated friendships, divided families, and the complex ways we deal with grief.
